You have a crack on your phone, the speaker has been acting up, your phone seems slow and sluggish to load, and you want to replace it as soon as possible. This piece is to inform you that now is the worst time to buy a smartphone. Here are three reasons why.
1. Smartphone Season is Coming
We’re vastly approaching the closing of summer, which means, smartphone season is coming up! Every fall, starting from September and finishing out in October, all of the most popular smartphones makers get on stage to release and try to convince us to buy their new shiny smartphone.
If history repeats itself — and it has for the past 5 years — Apple will be releasing their new iPhone in the first week of September. Rumors have it that there will be three. No word on what the names of these devices will actually be, but they could be the following: iPhone XS, iPhone XS Plus, and iPhone X. Again, I’m most likely wrong on the names, but what’s pretty much confirmed at this point is that their will be three.
For the past two years, Google has announced their new Pixel phones, on Oct. 4th. This year shouldn’t be any different. Information about the new Pixel phones has been scarce, but so far we know that there will again be two devices, Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. There are also images based on renders and leaks that have been provide by numerous of sources. I like this one made by Phone Designer below.
With these two new series of phones coming from Google and Apple, I suggest waiting on buying a new phone. However, what if you don’t want the latest and greatest?
2. Last Year Phones Get Cheaper
Just like almost everything else in consumer world, the previous generation of smartphones receive huge discounts to remove inventory. Sometimes those discounts come early before the new device comes out. You’ll just have to keep browsing the web for the best deals. You can even buy a gently used iPhone or Pixel at very reasonable price.
3. Holiday Sales are Great!
One of the main reasons why smartphones are released in the fall is because it’s also when people begin to spend the most money on Black Friday. I’ve worked in Best Buy for 2 years and the discounts and sales are insane. Last year, Google offered a Google Home, Google Daydream View, and $25 Google Play Store credit with a Pixel phone. Apple offered a huge price drop in the Apple Watch and iPhone 7 and 7 Plus last year. There’s a deal out there for everyone.
So before you go out and replace your smartphone, remember that smartphone season is upon us. I plan on covering everything that will be announced this smartphone season, deciphering the good, the bad, and the “meh” in both releases. So hold on just a little while longer to take advantage of what’s the offer. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Worst cast scenario is you don’t like what’s announced this fall and you buy the same device that you have, but new and at a much cheaper discounted price. Still a win-win!
